Reading Notes--Week 10

This week I am going to try my take on the strategy that focuses on setting

The Wise and the Foolish Merchant Ellen C. Babbit
In this story, there was mention of an ox, which makes it seem as if the story is set somewhere far off the city. I am imagining this story to be in an African country (I just read The Alchemist for the second time, so Egypt is on my mind, hah). I'm going to settle with Egypt as the country I am envisioning this place to be because there is also mention of a dessert. I like this story the best because the wise merchant uses his past knowledge to assume the demon was a demon without his shadow. I don't understand how the demon got the best of the other merchant though. He is probably just too trusting. I also don't understand how the men that traveled with him weren't opposed to throwing out all their water. This is really one of those "strength of the pack is the wolf"scenarios.

The Quarrel of Quails Ellen C. Babbit
Set in a forest, the mention of quails means that this probably isn't a tropical one. This one is sort of hard to focus on the set because it's super short and doesn't have much imagery! I like the message behind the story though. When the quails were too busy fighting instead of working together, they ended up getting captures

Grannies Blackie Ellen C. Babbit
Elephants make me think of India or Africa.  I really appreciate the devotion the elephant has to Grannie! It is sweet to think the elephant noticed how much help the Grannie needed. He grew up alongside her children, and he was the only one to offer his help. On top of that, when he didn't think he was getting paid enough, he refused to leave until he got paid what he felt he deserved.
